How to Make Your Yard Unattractive to Wildlife

What is a favorite food of rodents, raccoons and coyotes? Fruit! Many of our apple, fig and plum trees are abundant this time of year – attracting unwanted wildlife. Ensure ripe fruit is picked and fallen fruit is removed daily. Remove debris or brush piles that may harbor rats. Remove bird/squirrel feeders and pick up pet feces daily. Birdseed and poop attract rodents and the animals that prey on them. If you have a dog, check your fences: unseen holes may be letting in uninvited visitors. Clean, well-maintained yards help reduce unwelcome wildlife. For more tips, see our Yard Checklist.
